Where to Put a Gazebo in Your Garden: Practical Guide

The spot decides whether you use the gazebo or walk past it. A good plan will not fix a bad place. This guide does not pick timber or a floor plan. It picks where the building should stand.

On surveys I walk the garden with the client first. I look for noon shade, the neighbour’s windows and the route from the kitchen. Only then do we mark the anchors. If you do not yet know which garden gazebo you want, go back to the choice. Here I assume the model is already decided.

What should you weigh when choosing a gazebo spot?

Four things, in this order: use, plot, view and sun. Use says whether it belongs near the house. The plot says whether you have a flat pad, a slope or a narrow strip. The view decides what you look at and how the gazebo looks from the terrace. The sun says whether you need shade or morning light.

Do not start with a catalogue photo. Start with how you will use it three times a week, not once a year.

On a recent survey in the Danube lowland the client wanted the gazebo “in the middle of the lawn, so you can see it”. After walking the plot we moved it eight metres towards the house. The tray walk from the kitchen got shorter and the road disappeared behind a hedge. The middle of the garden stayed grass.

Closer to the house, or in a quiet corner?

Near the house if you will eat, celebrate and carry food from the kitchen. Further out if you want quiet, privacy and a view away from the windows. By a pool or a play area we place it as shade within sight, not as the main dining room.

A far corner gives calm. It suits reading, a dark night sky and a talk without house lights. It does not suit a plate carried every day. Close to the house it can stand in for a terrace if you have none. Put it behind the house, not on the street side. From the gazebo you want the garden, not traffic.

How should you orient a gazebo to the sun?

Orientation changes when you can sit there. South gives light all day and overheats in summer, so you need shade. East gives morning sun for breakfast. West holds the afternoon and evening. North is the coolest and suits hot summers.

On a south face without shade you will not stay in July. A bioclimatic pergola with rotating louvres, a roller blind or a shift into the house shadow will fix that. Wind and rain need side screens and proper anchors, not only a roof.

If you also plan the garden by compass points, a gazebo in a feng shui garden sits to the north-west, the side of friendly ties. That is an extra, not a substitute for sun and view.

What does Slovak building law say about the spot?

From 1 April 2025 Act No. 25/2025 applies in Slovakia. A ground-level building, structure or assembled product fixed to the ground is a minor building if the built-up area does not exceed 50 m² and the height is 5 m. The act lists shelters and summer kitchens among the examples. A typical garden gazebo fits that limit.

Minor building does not mean you can put it anywhere. Notification, setback from the boundary and rules on heritage or protected land still need a check at the local building office. A municipality can add its own conditions. On our projects we therefore measure the spot against the fence, not only against the sun. Tip: Before you order, measure three distances: from the kitchen, from the plot boundary and from the nearest tree. A tree gives shade, but roots and autumn leaves complicate anchors and drainage.

Where should you not put a gazebo?

Not in front of the neighbours’ windows and not facing the road. Not in a puddle and not where water stands after rain. Not tight under a large tree if you do not want leaves in the gutters all autumn. A slope is fine if the view is good and we can level the base. A narrow strip by the fence is not, if a table and a path around it will not fit.
