Heating a Winter Garden: Which System Should You Choose?

How to heat a winter garden? The glass decides first: double glass has U near 2.8, triple below 1. Underfloor, convectors, infrared and heat pumps compared.

In short: The glass decides the heating bill before any heater does. Plain double glass has a U of about 2.8 W/(m²·K); modern triple falls below 1 (insulated glazing). A winter garden is the only garden building meant to serve you when it freezes outside. To be comfortable it needs heating designed together with the glass, ventilation and shading, not added after the first cold autumn. Why does the glass, not the heater, decide the heating bill?

The glass decides how much you pay for heat before any heater does. Insulated glazing is described by the heat-transfer coefficient U: the lower the number, the less heat escapes through the surface. Plain double glass without a coating sits around 2.8 W/(m²·K); modern triple glass with a coating and argon falls below 1.

Because a winter garden is mostly glass, that difference shows up in every heating season. From our practice the logic is simple: the better the glass, the smaller and cheaper the heat source you need. So at the design stage we first fine-tune glazing and seals and only then size the heating.

Saving on glass and making up for it with heater output is the most expensive route – heat leaves faster than you can produce it. Always check the U-value of the glass on the drawing, not only in the catalogue.

Underfloor heating: comfort that must be planned ahead

Underfloor heating gives the most even thermal comfort, but it has to be planned before the floor is laid. Heat rises evenly from the ground across the whole area, with no draught and no visible units under the glass. On our installs customers value it most where they walk barefoot and where the winter garden is a full living room.

It has two traits worth knowing in advance. First, it responds slowly – warming up and cooling down both take longer, so it suits stable, all-day tempering rather than a quick one-hour boost. Second, it is part of the floor build-up, so it is designed together with the foundation slab and cannot be added easily later.

If you plan the winter garden as an everyday room, decide on underfloor heating before the concrete is poured. It pairs well with a heat pump, which supplies water at a lower temperature.

Convectors and radiators: the quick and simple answer

Convectors and radiators are the simplest solution and can be added even to a finished winter garden. They heat the air, which carries warmth around the room by circulation, and they respond fast – you feel heat within moments of switching on. That makes them a good choice where you want to warm the space quickly now and then, or where there is nowhere left to hide underfloor heating.

Electric convectors need no water pipes and fit almost anywhere; hot-water radiators can be linked to an existing heat source in the house. The drawback is air movement: circulation stirs up dust and the heat is less even than radiant warmth. Units also take up space by the wall or under the glass.

In practice we choose them as a supplementary or main source for more seasonally used gardens, where there is no reason to invest in a more complex system.

Infrared panels: heat for surfaces and people

Infrared panels heat surfaces and people rather than the air, which makes them ideal for occasional use. Radiant heat works like the sun: it crosses the space and warms the objects and people it lands on, so you feel warmth almost immediately after switching on. Panels mount on the ceiling or wall, take up no floor and do not stir dust the way convectors do.

That makes them a practical choice for a winter garden you do not use daily but want warm within minutes – for weekend breakfasts or an evening sit-down. Because they heat where they “see”, they also serve well as a supplementary source above a seating area. For holding a temperature across a large glazed room through a whole winter they are less suited than underfloor heating or a heat pump; their strength is speed and spot heat, not steadily tempering the volume.

Heat pump and split units: year-round use including cooling

A heat pump or a wall-mounted split unit is the most versatile solution for a year-round winter garden, because in summer it can also cool. The same device that brings heat in winter can remove heat from the room in summer – and overheating is as big a topic in a glazed building as the cold. A split unit can be added to a finished garden, whereas a heat pump linked to underfloor heating is planned ahead.

From our practice this makes the most sense where the winter garden is to serve as a full room twelve months of the year. The key is not to mistake comfort cooling for a replacement for shading: air conditioning can lower the temperature, but when the sun beats on the glass, the cheapest and most effective move is to keep the heat out with external shading. We therefore design the system together with the glazing and shading, not on its own.

Condensation, ventilation and shading: do not trade winter for summer

Good heating alone is not enough – without ventilation and shading you buy winter comfort at the cost of summer overheating and condensation. In a glazed room, moisture from breathing and plants condenses on the coldest surfaces, typically the glass; quality low-U glazing and controlled ventilation greatly reduce that. So ventilation belongs in the design from the start, not as an extra after the first heatwave: opening windows, roof-top venting or heat recovery carry off humid, overheated air.

External shading matters just as much. In southern Slovakia we deal with summer overheating more often than snow on the roof, because snow cover there lasts on average under 30 days (SHMÚ); conditions elsewhere differ.

We put the shade in front of the glass, where it stops the sun before it warms the interior. Treat heating, ventilation and shading as one whole.

Which heating system should you finally choose?

Choose the system by how you will use the space, not by one number in a catalogue. If the winter garden is to be an everyday living room, go for underfloor heating, ideally with a heat pump that adds cooling in summer. If you use it mainly at weekends and want heat fast, infrared panels or convectors serve well.

For a seasonal space that only stretches the terrace into autumn, a convector is often enough and the emphasis is better placed on better glass and ventilation.
