Rebuilding a Terrace Shelter

• A 16-year iron shelter stood on the terrace. We replaced it with a white aluminium pergola and opal polycarbonate.

A rebuild is not a coat of paint. It is the decision whether the old frame stays or comes down and something else takes the same spot. This article is from one terrace. A couple wanted shade without rust. The iron was more than 16 years old.

Why did we not repair the old iron shelter?

After sixteen years on a terrace, iron holds rust, joints and shade that is no longer enough. A repaint would have extended the coating, not the comfort. The clients wanted a maintenance-free white frame that matched the facade. So we replaced the structure, we did not brush it.

During demolition I checked the anchors in the terrace. Some feet still held. The beam did not. There is no point hanging a new roof on that iron. Aluminium goes on its own anchors.

What frame did we put in place of the iron?

A white aluminium pergola. The white matched the house. Aluminium does not want a yearly coat. We use the same idea on a carport. For a smaller entrance, the same thinking applies to a door canopy. The anchoring is close to installing an aluminium bioclimatic pergola, only the roof here is not louvred.

Why opal polycarbonate, not clear glass?

The clients wanted shade in summer and not darkness in winter. Polycarbonate according to Palram blocks almost the relevant UV spectrum (UVA and UVB) and still lets light through. The opal tint scatters the sun. Clear glass would have baked the table on a south terrace.

What did we add on the front, and what should you check first?

On the front we fitted a screen in side guides. Wind and rain are handled by the cloth with the frame, not by a promise without a measurement. Colour comes from the sample book to the facade. The wind rating comes from the fabric maker’s sheet for that type, not from memory.

For a larger rebuild, check notification. From 1 April 2025 Act No. 25/2025 applies in Slovakia. A ground-level building up to 50 m² and 5 m high is a minor building. Attachment to the house, setback and municipal rules still need the office. Heritage land is stricter.

Is it worth painting the old shelter, or replacing it?

Paint if beams and anchors still hold. Replace if rust is in the joint and the shade is no longer enough. On this terrace we replaced the whole frame.

What roof should go on the new pergola?

On a south terrace, opal polycarbonate if you want shade and light. Polycarbonate blocks UV and lets daylight through. Leave clear glass where the sun does not hit the table.

Do I need to notify a rebuild?

Check at the local office. From 1 April 2025 a ground-level building up to 50 m² and 5 m is a minor building in Slovakia under Act 25/2025. Attachment to the house and the municipality may still ask for notification.
