If you’ve got a garden gazebo or pergola, we’re sure you want to enjoy it for as long as possible. Gazebos and pergolas from our workshop are extremely high quality and durable. However, this does not mean that they do not need to be cared for at all. In winter, high snow cover can cause problems.
How to remove snow from a gazebo
Do you have an open gazebo? It is therefore exposed to the weather both from the outside and from the inside. To maximize its life, take good care of it in winter. Of course, pre-season maintenance and preparing your gazebo for winter are also essential. During the winter season, all you have to do is to get rid of any snow cover that could damage the gazebo roof.
When removing snow from the gazebo, work very carefully, ideally in pairs. You will also need a ladder to get to the snow on the roof. It is therefore advisable to have someone to ‘belay’ you. Use a wooden or plastic rake to pull the snow down to the ground. Then remove the snow from around the gazebo so that it does not form huge pools of water when it melts. Remove the snow regularly from the interior of the gazebo.
Snow versus pergola
In our conditions, winter is unpredictable. Temperatures can be in the plus range one day and the next day you wake up to a snowy morning with a heavy covering of snow. This is the reality especially in the northern districts of Slovakia.
Our pergolas are suitable for all seasons. So they can cope with winter. Aluminum pergolas are made of very strong construction, which is sufficiently resistant to adverse weather conditions. It also helps to have a gently sloping roof on which the snow can slide off.
But a possible snow calamity can be a problem. What is the maximum load that Gazebo pergolas can handle? For example, for the Economic aluminum pergola, it is 110 kg per m2 and for the Top class aluminum pergola, it is up to 120 kg per m2, which is quite a lot. However, it is still best not to leave a heavy snow cover on the pergola. Wet snow is very heavy indeed.
Removing the snow from the pergola is easy and can be done very quickly. Use a wooden or plastic tool – ideally a rake. Disturb the layer of snow on the pergola and throw it on the ground.
If your pergola is connected to the house and has a window above it, you can also do it more conveniently and use the tool to throw the snow directly from the window, not from the ground. Do not use sharp or metal tools to avoid scratching the pergola!
It is not recommended to put gravel or salt on a wooden or aluminum pergola to thaw the ice. You could damage the surface. So how do I remove the ice? The best way is to try to disrupt its structure – break it into smaller pieces by tapping gently and then gradually remove them. However, such work is already more difficult. So be as careful as possible!
